hwadock was kind enough to provide his project files and has encouraged us to show you guys how he has done things. Here is his first animation again:

Here you can see the bones:

Most of the body is a mesh:

Note how the orange edges are used, this allows FFD on the internal vertices to bend the image in such a way that it gives a 3D effect. Besides FFD, bones also control the body mesh by using weights:

For the face, bones are used for the eyebrows, eyes and mouth but no skinning is used:

Again you can see the orange internal edges are used for the 3D effect via FFD.
And the other animation:

You can see the bones and some of the meshes:

The gun mesh a bit closer:

As for how the animation keys look, it is maybe fewer keys than you'd expect:

Most of the timelines are simple like that, with a few that look like they have been offset for secondary motion:

Kudos to hwadock for his amazing art and animation, and thanks for letting us all see the magic!

Wow, very awesome! It does look very 3d, how long did it take you to rig everything? (very nice attention to detail)
Thanks for sharing the "how it was done" as well- I'll definitely have to spend some times on meshes! I haven't even fully explored FFD's yet
I guess you could always balance CPU/ memory for mobile devices- if it ran too slow, you could output pre-rendered sprite sheets, and just worry about memory management. It's Spine, you have options!

Legendary guy and epic work! oO
It's kind like the process I follow when I can use more complex meshes (I wish mobile can allows me to always work this way).
Animations like that, the raptor from Shiu and a lot of showcases here really keeps me inspired.
Thank you guys!

Realy good work.
Really helpfull seeing how it was made.
Could you post the previous ones in unity webplayer too? I get shivers looking at it rendering in real time at 60 frames per second.
(also, what happened to your website?)
