Spine-Unity colors washed out thread

For anyone running into the "washed-out problem" in Unity 6.

This "problem" also exists in recent versions but I'm not sure in which specific version Unity switched their defaults. But it's related to switching the project's color space to Linear instead of Gamma (which you might have done on your own in older versions of Unity. But Unity Technologies thought it made sense to switch to Linear as their new default for new projects)

If you want to use Unity's default Linear color space:

The atlas images need to be exported with Premultiply alpha unchecked.
In Unity, the 🖼️ Texture asset of the atlas needs to have sRGB (Color texture) checked
In Unity, the 🔵 Material asset needs to have Straight Alpha Texture checked. This setting may not be necessary if you are using other shaders.

If you don't want to use the default Linear color space, just go to the project settings and change the color space to Gamma.

Note that there are reasons why you'd use either color space so... I guess that can be a discussion?

I'm posting this as a simple user-side fix for now. And to keep it apart from a separate post I'm writing.

@Pharan Thanks for your writeup Pharan, and welcome back to Spine! 🙂 Note that you should also enable Bleed in the atlas texture export Texture Packer Settings. While Unity also performs bleed on the texture when setup properly, it's better to be on the safe side.

The default Color Space was switched from Gamma to Linear in Unity 2020.3 for Built-In Render Pipeline projects, perhaps already 2020.2 (so already quite some time ago). For URP projects, Linear color space has always been the default (so 2019.X, also in 2018.4 with LWRP).

To address the "washed-out colors" issue in Unity when using Spine, it's important to ensure that your project settings and asset configurations align with the color space you are using. If you are using Unity's default Linear color space, you should export your atlas images with "Premultiply alpha" unchecked. In Unity, make sure the Texture asset of the atlas has "sRGB (Color texture)" checked, and the Material asset has "Straight Alpha Texture" checked, although this may not be necessary if you are using other shaders. If you prefer not to use Linear color space, you can switch your project settings to Gamma color space. Each color space has its own advantages, so the choice depends on your specific needs.

I forgot the forum disables edits after some time.

I was going to emphaisze the part where this is the solution if you want to stay with the Linear color space.

But part of the solution is to change the settings in Edit > Preferences > Spine

Using these settings makes sure future assets are imported correctly.

For new users or passers-by, just switching the project's color space to Gamma is the quickest way to a solution. But if it's an existing project with lots of stuff in it, that's a no go.

There's a lot more to describe about either setting.
I'll just make a blog post about that in my own time.
