  • Spline Tangent Handles

Hello all,

I'm a brand new user trying out the software. I've watched all the videos and read the documentation. I've seen in several videos the ability to manipulate the spline tangents using handles in the graph editor, but I can't even select the handles. I don't se anything here in the forums suggesting that functionality has changed, or that there might be a bug.

I've selected two frames, I've got my slow in/slow out preset selected and can see the handles, but I can't select them. What am I doing wrong?

I'm using 3.5.43 Education copy on a Windows 7 laptop.

Thanks so much.

Select any key that isn't the last key, then open the graph (alt+G, or cmd+G on Mac), then change the curve type to Bezier. I'm guessing that's the step you missed. Then you can drag the curve handles around.

Thanks, Nate. I think I've done everything you've suggested. I've got my bezier handles showing, I can see them. I've got my curve set to a slow in/slow out curve (one of the defaults). I just can't select them. In the video tutorials it looks like the author just clicks on them, and the little circle goes solid. Then he can move them about. When I click the handles, they remain hollow, and dragging about the screen does nothing to affect them.

They should go solid just by hovering the mouse over them. I can drag handles in 3.5.43. Can you take a screenshot of the whole app window so we can be sure you are looking at the right thing? It sounds like you are, but I can't think of any reason for you to not be able to interact with the curve handles.

Thanks, Nate. I'm a professor in the animation department of Sheridan in Toronto. I am evaluating Spine now for our 2D Animation stream. We've already purchased the educational licenses as well as a faculty license for me. I'll be using the software to teach the 12 Principles and then moving on to a simple 2D side scroller in Unity.

Here is a screen shot of what I am seeing. I am unable to manipulate the handles in any way. https://gyazo.com/85fa0e9af0b1c671b6e45b6e33561df9

I have tried to do so with a single frame selected, two adjacent or multiple. I have tried left clicking, right clicking, middle mouse clicking and hovering, nothing makes the handles accessible.

Great! I hope Spine proves useful for your class, once we get over this strange problem at least.

With a similar configuration (tree filter, loop, adjust, etc), I am able to manipulate the graph handles:

Have you tried resizing the Graph view or dragging it to another location? Can you try with a different project, like the raptor? Can you try using the latest beta? Opt-in in Spine's settings, then restart Spine. You might also try the Spine trial. Once we find some more clues we should be able to figure out what is going on.

I just tried it with several projects as well as with the graph in several locations with no different results. I see you are using the pro version. My understanding was that the EDU version was the PRO version just without commercial capabilities. I need the capabilities of the PRO version for teaching purposes, so trying the trial version will not help me.

Are you one of the developers or the company owners? Can you try it with the EDU version?

Obviously manipulation of the graph editor is of extreme importance to my animation students. I'm hoping we can work out this issue.

EDIT. More testing and I can't seem to resize the graph editor either. I can drag it around, but I can't actually resize it.

I am founder and CTO, both a software engineer and owner.

PRO and EDU have the same functionality, but I did try using your EDU activation code without problems on Windows 10 and Windows 7 in a VM. There is no limitation for being able to drag curve handles in the Graph view, even in ESS or the trial. I know you don't want to use the trial or even possibly the beta, I'm just looking for more information about the problem. We've never encountered someone having this problem before. Since we cannot reproduce the problem, we need to find out more before we can make any progress.

Another thing to try is an older version of Spine. In the Spine settings dialog you can click Other and type 3.4.02, which is the last major release before 3.5.xx. If it works in 3.4.02 then we've at least narrowed it down slightly.

You could check your spine.log file: <user home folder>\Spine\spine.log
It's unlikely such a problem would log an error, but it's worth a look.

You can try resetting your settings. Close Spine, delete this file:
<user home folder>\Spine\prefs.json
Then restart Spine.

To be sure, is everything else in the UI working correctly? Buttons light up when hovered, etc?

How are you trying to resize the Graph view? Your mouse cursor should turn into a hand along the view edges.

There's nothing special about the Graph view that should make it not respond to the mouse. If the handles don't go solid when you mouse over them, then for some reason the mouse events aren't getting to the graph. Nothing stands out as a reason that would occur. Hopefully the above can shed some light on what is going on.

Glad to meet you then, and happy that I'm getting help directly from you.

For the most part, hovering does not do anything, meaning I can't resize anything either. My mouse pointer never changes.

Mouse over sensitive help menus work in some locations, but not in others (not sure if it's supposed) and in some locations is very slow to appear.

I am working on a laptop (though one powerful enough to run any software package I work with, Maya, Max, Motion Builder, Unity, UE4, many simultaneously). I'm not sure how the licensing works for Spine however. I can try the package on my desktop...are the faculty licences floating?

If you would like to take this offline you can direct message me.

EDIT: I installed the trial version on my desktop and I have the ability to resize, and manipulate the spline handles there. My laptop does not work the same way at all.

Is everything else in the UI working correctly? Buttons light up when hovered, etc? Does your mouse cursor change for resizing views other than the Graph view?

Have you tried other Spine versions on the problematic computer?

Did you look at spine.log? Delete prefs.json?

Deleting the prefs.json file has fixed the issue. I can now move my handles and resize the panels.

Thanks for your help!

If this ever happens to you again, please resize the entire window of the application. There's a known issue on Mac that sounds a lot like what you encountered that can be fixed that way.

Well that's a bit unexpected. There must have been something bad about your view layout, which is stored in the preferences. Hopefully it'll happen for us one day so we can see it. If it happens again, please make a copy of your prefs.json and send it to us. I would have suggested that, but I really didn't expect it to be a settings problem.

At any rate, I'm glad it's working for you as it should now!
